WHY FORGETTING OUR FARMING HISTORY IS A MISTAKE WE CAN’T AFFORD

“If you don’t know where you’ve come from, you don’t know where you’re going.”

That is a famous quote by American poet, actress, and civil rights activist, Maya Angelou, and captures something that one North Queenslander told me recently about preserving the region’s history.

In his view, too many of the stories that shaped North Queensland agriculture have been lost and with them valuable lessons.

He grew up on a Merino sheep farm in the north west, something I could not believe because I’ve only known North Queensland as cattle country.

The industry was largely decimated in the late 20th century by droughts, predator incursions, and disease yet it shaped the north west.
